How It Starts is a series of twenty 30 × 40-inch posters that examines the fragmented nature of formative memory. Rather than depicting complete scenes, each composition isolates a single visual detail- a cropped image capable of triggering an entire remembered experience. Like memory itself, these fragments invite the viewer to reconstruct what exists beyond the frame, allowing a small moment to unfold into something far larger and more personal.
Each poster begins with one of four hand-built woodblock prints, fabricated through an additive process using cut lumber, adhesives, and traditional woodworking tools. The resulting prints were digitized, reconstructed from multiple high-resolution scans, and integrated with photography, geometric graphic forms, custom typography, and short-form poetry. Together, these layers create a visual language that exists between physical printmaking and contemporary graphic design, balancing tactile imperfections with deliberate digital precision.
Originally conceived as a wall installation, the series ultimately became an oversized flip book, encouraging viewers to physically navigate the work one memory at a time. The project represents an early exploration of autobiographical design practice, using personal experience not as documentation, but as material for visual storytelling.
